In this commentary, published today in The American Journal of Bioethics, I share how we are move beyond evaluating AI models solely on their technical performance. Equally important is determining how they will influence care decisions, and how responsibility should be shared between humans and intelligent systems.
While they are important, the utility of AI in healthcare won’t be defined by algorithms alone. Rather, it will be defined by the governance structures, ethical frameworks, and clinical partnerships that ensure these technologies improve care safely, equitably, and responsibly.
